Tucki Trail

Distance from Beatty: 60 miles

It was a rare sunny day, so we decided to go on a back road adventure. We have a few books on where to find SUV trails in Death Valley and the surrounding area, so we turned to one of those for ideas and came up with the Tucki Mine for a goal, a fifty mile drive on the hard road and another ten miles on the rocky trail that winds its way up Tucki Mountain to the mine. Cool!

It was a great drive. The road was never bad enough to be scary but bad enough that a couple of time we had to get out and assess the situation to decide how best to proceed. That's part of the fun, though.

The pics show some of the things we saw.. spring flowers; the rusty frame of an ancient pickup truck (with part of its wooden running board still attached); and lots of cool geology including rocks, of course, but also a pretty spectacular natural arch.

The mine area was the tidiest abandoned mine area we've seen. Not that we've seen many, but still. There just wasn't as much old junk lying about as there is at the other sites we've been to.

There is a cabin that can be used as a shelter in emergencies. It was like THE CABIN we visited back in March only not as nice, possibly because it's more remote and not visited as often as that other one. But if you were in need of shelter, you'd be delighted to find this place.

Like the other cabin it's furnished but with the seediest of items. I suspect people (all volunteers!) would be willing to furnish it with nicer things, but they'd likely get stolen, unfortunately, whereas the shabby furnishings stay put. So, there's a lumpy old couch, a rickety table with a couple of chairs, a cot with dirty mattress, even a small bookcase full of books. On one of the walls hangs an assortment of tools that can be used to make repairs. On the table is a spiral notebook - the visitors' log, with entries dating back to 1999.

hi kit and ryan,

oh your pics bring back such memories...I lived in Las Vegas for 35 years and still have a summer home there. I will always love the west. (I am from Ohio too!)

If you wish please visit my blog too. I shall subscribe to your blog also. We are about the same age and I would love to swap stories of the west. My blog is all about aging well, good health, and other assorted ramblings of an old broad.

I am also a published writer of poetry and prose so you never know what I will post. I add new things every day. I would love to hear from you.

to your good health,
sage
